| no partners | | We approached this Nelson City Council land from Market Road in Bishopdale, started up the Kahikatea, then linked the Tawa and Summit Road Tracks to the
transmission tower at the 1280' highpoint. Views here were restricted by the surrounding thick, diverse native bush, so we looped around the tower and descended north to the observation deck. This was a great perspective of Nelson, the city's port, Abel Tasman NP and the Tasman Bay. After our repose, we mistakenly descended the Mamaku Track (which was an interesting fern grove mostly) and then returned to the more airy Grampians Walkway after heading east at a three-way junction. Continuing the descent north, we eventually turned left at the steeply switchbacked Ronaki Track and finished the trail portion of our walk on another mellow section of the Tawa Track. Three of the trails we followed are named after the native plants present in the reserve. The most impressive species were several of the massive podocarp Kahikatea (White Pine) along the first namesaked track. Of course the vegetation is vastly different, but this reserve is somewhat similar hiking as SoMo is to South Phoenix, Tempe and Ahwatukee, in that it's a usually dry, sometimes fire-restricted urban park with noisy city sounds constantly. If one lived close by in Nelson South, you'd likely be maintaining your fitness here often and/or birdwatching. |
