Plenty of water (still flowing over the road at the Flat), but not so much to make navigation a chore like the last time I was here in January. The wildflowers there are just now blooming. There were lizards and butterflies everywhere (we even saw a Gila monster), but not too many buzzing insects. A clear, blue sky and a steady breeze made for a very enjoyable day.
We parked at the overflow lot by Tortilla Flat and took advantage of the shortcut over the hill and down to the creek. Rock hopping our way to the canyon was pretty straight forward with enough 'stepping stones' that we really didn't have to backtrack any when we needed to cross the creek. There was plenty of water in the canyon, too, but navigation was fairly easy and we never got our feet wet.
I am surprised that we only saw about 8 other people on this beautiful Saturday, but the overall solitude of this amazing canyon is one of the reasons that make it a favorite of mine. I was wishing I had my camping gear because there is so much to see out here that one day just isn't enough! |
