Thought about the Foothills trail but I read the it pretty much followed route 162 and a noisy roadside walk didn't appeal to me so I chose this one instead. Started at the McMillin Trailhead. On the north side of the parking lot there is a gate that marks the entrance to this trail. Unlike the Foothills trail, this trail is not paved. It's a wide gravel/dirt trail the entire stretch. I took this about 6.5 miles to where it intersects with Orville Road just south of Orting. Came back the same way. There are options to do a loop by combining this trail with the Foothills trail. Outside of the first 5 minutes and a short section near the Orting dog park, this walk is void of road noise as you stick close to the Puyallup river the entire way. You pass a golf course and some nearby neighborhoods along the way but the river is always right there. Several places to access the river as well. Good views of Mt. Rainier from the golf course and the stretch of trail just north of the Orting Dog Park. Some sections are not shaded and those would be hot during the summer but otherwise this is a good year round option to get outside. |
